More Lankan refugees arrive in Tamil Nadu
Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, May 24 : There has been no let up in the inflow of Tamil refugees from the strife-torn island nation of Sri Lanka with as many as 120 people, belonging to 32 families, arriving at Dhanushkodi Coast early today by six boats.
Official sources said they included 37 women and 21 children.
They fled Trinconmalee out of fear of getting trapped in the hostilities between the Sri Lankan Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The 'Q' Branch police were making arrangements to send them to the refugee camp in Mandapam after ascertaining their identity.
With this as many as 1,685 refugees have arrived in Tamil Nadu since January last, following the outbreak of hostilities.
Yesterday, Rameswaram saw influx of 27 families, including 37 women and 24 children. They arrived boats from Thalaimannar on six boats.
Sources said Tamils were gripped by fear of insecurity in the island nation and fleeing homes due to several incidents of violence.
