Curfew like situation in Srinagar, shooters deployed
Srinagar, May 24 :Curfew like situation prevailed here as unprecedented security arrangments have been made with sharp shooters deployed to thwart any militant strike during the two-day Round Table Conference convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from today.
Security forces wearing bullet proof jackets and holding automatic weapons were seen on both sides of the deserted streets in the city.
Police and security force personnel were seen guarding all lanes and bylanes of the city directing people to remain indoors.
It was tough time for mediapersons to reach their offices because of unprecedented security measures taken in view of the yesterday's fidayeen attack on a Border Security Force (BSF) bus, resulting in the injuries to 26 personnel on the Srinagar-airport road near Pirbagh.
We have orders not to allow anybody to move towards the city in a vehicle, a police officer said at Natipora, uptown, crossing.
He said because of yesterdays car blast by the fidayeen, it was decided not to allow any vehicle to ply in the city for security reasons.
Sharp shooters have also been deployed to guard the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex (SKICC), venue for the second Round-Table Conference.
The roads leading the SKICC, on the bank of famed Dal Lake, have been closed for traffic for security reasons as four militant outfits have issued threats to disrupt the conference.
