OoP Bill: Cong flays BJP for double standards

New Delhi, May 17: The Congress today assailed what it called the hypocrisy and double standards of the BJP in opposing the Office of Profit Bill, saying the party itself had got passed similar legislation in Jharkhand.

'' Having themselves passed legislation in Jharkhand, it did not befit the BJP to talk about morality,'' Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.

'' What is good for the BJP in Jharkhand is bad in Delhi,'' Mr Singhvi said briefing newsmen here, adding, ''this is opportunistic, expediency and preaching without practice.'' '' When time comes to oppose in Parliament, Jharkhand must be abandoned as a bad dream,'' he said.

Mr Singhvi said Leader of the Opposition L K Advani, who was waxing eloquent on the issue of Office of Profit, should have first resigned from his post as he held the post due to similar legislation passed earlier. '' We have no objection to his right to oppose the Bill, but he should have first quit his post before opposing the Bill.'' Mr Advani, he pointed out, had specifically said the sole ground for the BJP to oppose the Bill was the inclusion of the NAC among the exempted posts. ''This are extreme double standards and extreme hypocrisy.'' The Congress Spokesman pointed out that as many as 22 posts had been exempted from the purview of Office of Profit in Jharkhand, but the BJP was being immoral in opposing the Bill for the inclusion of the NAC among the exempted posts.''People understand this double standards.'' The NAC, he said, had been instrumental in getting legislation passed on the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Right to Information.
