35 people injured in yesterday's quake

Ahmedabad, Apr 7: As many as 35 people were injured in the Kutch region last night as they rushed out of their houses in panic and were caught in stampede following moderate intensity tremors in Northern Gujarat.

Police said walls of a few houses in Rapar and Bachao of Bhuj district collapsed following three tremors, one in the evening and two late night.

As the houses began shaking around midnight, peaple ran out and 30-35 of them were injured in stampede across the Kutch region, police said. However, the injuries were minor in almost all cases.

People in Gujarat have been worried over the second moderate intensity quake within a month, recalling their horrific experiences of January, 2001 major earthquake. The last moderate intensity earthquake hit the State on March 7 last.

Meanwhile, the quakes yesterday were measured 5.5 on Richter scale, at around 2330 hrs, and 4.7 at around 1733 hrs and the tremors were felt in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Morbi and Rapar. The intensity of quake in North Gujarat was higher.

The quake measuring 5.5 on Richter scale had its epicentre at 23.5 degree North and 70.3 degree East in Kutch district.
