US-Saudi Arabia Relations Strengthened as Trump Hosts Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House

US President Donald Trump recently hosted Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. This visit marked the prince's first in seven years. Despite US intelligence reports implicating the prince in journalist Jamal Khashoggi's 2018 murder, Trump dismissed these findings. Instead, he praised the prince as crucial for shaping the Middle East's future.

The relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia had been strained due to Khashoggi's murder. However, Trump has strengthened ties with the crown prince, who announced plans to increase Saudi investments in the US from USD 600 billion to USD 1 trillion. The prince described the US as "the hottest country on the planet for investment."

During his visit, Prince Mohammed aimed to solidify his global standing by diversifying Saudi Arabia's economy beyond oil. Plans include investing in sectors like mining, technology, and tourism. A senior Trump administration official mentioned upcoming announcements on US-Saudi cooperation in artificial intelligence and civil nuclear energy.

Trump revealed an agreement to sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, despite concerns about potential Chinese access to US technology. This decision surprised some within his administration who worried about Israel's military edge. Trump hopes this move will encourage Saudi Arabia to normalise relations with Israel.

The president has been working on expanding the Abraham Accords, which previously established ties between Israel and several Arab nations. He believes Saudi Arabia joining these accords could lead other Arab countries to follow suit. However, Saudi Arabia insists on a clear path toward Palestinian statehood before normalising relations with Israel.

Prince Mohammed has consistently denied any role in Khashoggi's death. He stated that Saudi Arabia took appropriate steps to investigate the incident, acknowledging it as a painful mistake. "It's painful and it's a huge mistake," he said. However, US intelligence declassified in 2021 indicated the prince likely approved Khashoggi's killing.

Human Rights Concerns

Ahead of Prince Mohammed's visit, human rights groups urged Trump to address human rights issues with Saudi authorities. They highlighted ongoing repression of dissent in Saudi Arabia, including arrests of journalists and political dissidents. "US officials should be pressing for change, not posing for photos," said Sarah Yager from Human Rights Watch.

Despite these concerns, Trump commended Prince Mohammed for progress on human rights without providing specifics. "I'm very proud of the job he's done," Trump stated, praising the prince's efforts in various areas.

White House Ceremony and Future Plans

The crown prince received a warm welcome at the White House with a ceremony featuring military honours and a Marine band performance. Although not a state visit, as Prince Mohammed is not head of state, he manages daily governance for his father, King Salman.

The visit also included plans for an investment summit at the Kennedy Center with major companies like Salesforce and Chevron. More deals with Saudi Arabia could be announced during this event.

Trump's family maintains strong business interests in Saudi Arabia through ventures like Trump Plaza Jeddah. Despite potential conflicts of interest, Trump stated he has no involvement in his family's business dealings.

The crown prince's visit underscores efforts to strengthen US-Saudi ties amid ongoing geopolitical challenges and human rights concerns.
