Trump Reveals Assurance from Xi Jinping on Taiwan Unification During His Presidency
US President Donald Trump revealed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him China would not attempt to unify Taiwan with the mainland during Trump's term. This assurance came amid discussions primarily centred on trade tensions between the US and China. Trump expressed confidence that China would refrain from any action concerning Taiwan while he remains in office.
The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act shapes US relations with Taiwan. It does not require the US to defend Taiwan militarily if China invades. However, it ensures Taiwan can defend itself and discourages Beijing from changing the status quo unilaterally. This act reflects a longstanding policy of strategic ambiguity regarding military intervention.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not comment on Trump's statements immediately. Similarly, the White House did not provide further details about when Xi or other Chinese officials communicated their stance on Taiwan to Trump. These diplomatic interactions remain largely undisclosed to the public.
During an interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," Trump mentioned, "He has openly said, and his people have openly said at meetings, We would never do anything while President Trump is president, because they know the consequences." This statement highlights the diplomatic assurances received from China regarding Taiwan.
The "60 Minutes" interview was recorded at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. This marked Trump's first appearance on the programme since resolving a lawsuit with CBS News over an interview with Kamala Harris earlier in the year. The full interview is set to air later.
When asked about possible US military intervention if China attacked Taiwan, Trump avoided giving a direct answer. The US has maintained a policy of "strategic ambiguity" on this issue, leaving open whether it would defend Taiwan in such a scenario.
US officials have long been wary of China's potential use of military force against Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory. The self-governed island remains a contentious issue in US-China relations, with both Republican and Democratic administrations maintaining a cautious approach.
Trump's remarks underscore ongoing concerns about China's intentions towards Taiwan. The situation remains delicate, with diplomatic efforts continuing to prevent any escalation in tensions over the island's status.
