Who Is Govindachamy, The 2011 Soumya Rape Convict Who Is Caught After Escaping From Kannur Jail?

Govindachamy, convicted in the 2011 Soumya rape and murder case, has been caught by the cops after he escaped from Kannur Central Jail on Friday.

As per the jail authorities, he had escaped from the high-security prison between 4.15 am and 6.30 am and his absence was noticed during a routine headcount at 7:15 am.

Who Is Govindachamy The 2011 Soumya Rape Convict Who Escaped From Kannur Jail

Govindachamy, aged 49 and from Tamil Nadu, was serving a life sentence for the crime that shocked Kerala over a decade ago.

Authorities suspect he cut through iron bars of his cell and used a rope made of knotted clothing to escape. The exact details of his jailbreak remain under investigation. Police have released his latest photograph and urged the public to help locate him. He was reportedly wearing his jail uniform during the escape.

Background and Criminal History

Govindachamy has a long history of criminal record. Before his conviction in Kerala, he had already served time for eight separate cases in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, according to a report in The Times of India. He was also on trial for another robbery case. His crimes often involved targeting isolated train compartments and vulnerable passengers.

His modus operandi typically involved boarding trains, sometimes posing as a beggar, identifying lone female passengers or vulnerable individuals, then committing theft or assault. In Soumya's case, he grievously assaulted her before allegedly pushing her out of the train and raping her near Vallathol Nagar station.

The Soumya Case

On February 1, 2011, Govindachamy attacked Soumya, a 23-year-old saleswoman from Thrissur, while she travelled alone on a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shoranur. After attacking her in the ladies' compartment, he robbed her and pushed her off the moving train before dragging her into the woods to commit further atrocities, according to a report in The News Minute.

Soumya was found unconscious near Vallathol railway station and succumbed to her injuries five days later at Thrissur Government Medical College. Initially sentenced to death by a fast-track court in Thrissur for both rape and murder, Govindachamy's sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court due to inconclusive evidence regarding her being pushed off the train.

Public Reaction

The victim's mother expressed outrage over Govindachamy's escape. She alleged possible police assistance in his jailbreak and demanded his immediate re-arrest along with the death penalty. She criticised the Supreme Court's decision in 2016 that commuted his original death sentence to life imprisonment.

Govindachamy's reputation as a serial offender is well-known across Kerala and Tamil Nadu due to the brutal nature of his crimes against women travelling alone. During his trial for Soumya's case, prosecution documents confirmed multiple prior convictions establishing him as a habitual offender.

Prison Life and Escape

After being convicted for Soumya's case, Govindachamy was held in a high-security jail cell until his escape on July 25, 2025. Despite having one arm amputated following an earlier train accident during a robbery attempt years prior, he managed to evade authorities highlighting his criminal resourcefulness.

The public has been urged to contact authorities with any information about Govindachamy’s whereabouts at 94468 99506. His ability to escape despite physical limitations underscores concerns about security measures within high-security prisons.
