Sabarimala Rush: Virtual Q System Eases Crowds But Traffic Woes And Parking Issues Linger

The annual Sabarimala pilgrimage continues to draw massive crowds, with over 15.9 million devotees journeying to the hill shrine this season. While the ongoing influx presents challenges, concerted efforts by authorities have yielded positive results, particularly in improving crowd management at Sannidhanam and Nadapandal.

However, the recent implementation of temporary vehicle blockades on key routes has led to traffic congestion, requiring immediate attention.

Sabarimala Rush: Virtual Q System Eases Crowds But Traffic Woes And Parking Issues Linger

Virtual Q System Streamlines Pilgrim Flow at Sannidhanam

One of the most encouraging developments this season has been the significant improvement in crowd management at Sannidhanam and Nadapandal, the holiest sites within the Sabarimala temple complex.

Collaborative efforts between the police and Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) staff have implemented effective measures, including the virtual Q system, which has facilitated a smoother flow of pilgrims and reduced congestion. This is a welcome change from previous years, where overcrowding often posed a safety concern. On Monday alone, 54,692 pilgrims utilized the virtual Q system to reach Sannidhanam, demonstrating its effectiveness in managing the large crowds.

The TDB has also prioritised the safety and well-being of pilgrims by implementing various initiatives. A dedicated special revenue squad, led by a duty magistrate and executive magistrate, ensures the availability of drinking water and maintains order at critical points. Additionally, separate queues have been designated for the disabled, elderly, and children, providing them with a more comfortable and hassle-free pilgrimage experience. These measures have been praised by many pilgrims and are crucial for ensuring a safe and inclusive pilgrimage for all.

New Water Kiosks at Pampa

With the scorching December heat and the physical exertion involved in the pilgrimage, access to clean drinking water is paramount. Recognizing this need, the TDB has established new water kiosks at Pampa, supplementing the existing KWA (Kerala Water Authority) distribution centers. This has significantly improved the availability of drinking water for pilgrims, especially during peak hours.

Vehicle Blockades Near Nilakkal Cause Frustration for Pilgrims on Sabarimala Routes

While significant progress has been made in managing crowds and ensuring pilgrim safety, the issue of traffic congestion remains a concern. The recent implementation of temporary vehicle blockades on the Erumeli-Sabarimala and Pathanamthitta-Sabarimala routes, aimed at controlling the influx at Pampa and Sannidhanam, has resulted in long queues stretching across several kilometers. This has caused considerable inconvenience and frustration for pilgrims, some of whom have been forced to wait for hours before reaching Nilakkal, the base camp for the trek to Sabarimala.

Under-Utilized Parking Facilities Frustrate Pilgrims

Adding to the frustration of pilgrims is the under-utilization of parking facilities at Nilakkal. Despite having 17 parking grounds with a capacity to accommodate up to 8,000 vehicles, the lack of proper staff management and inadequate signage has led to inefficient utilization of available space. Police sources have highlighted the need for TDB to deploy personnel to guide drivers to vacant spaces and optimize the use of these parking facilities.

The TDB President, P S Prasanth, has acknowledged the shortcomings in parking management and has assured pilgrims that the issue will be addressed promptly. Implementing measures such as deploying staff to manage parking and installing clear signage will significantly improve the parking experience for pilgrims. Continued collaboration between the TDB, police, and other stakeholders will be crucial in ensuring a smooth and hassle-free pilgrimage season for all.
