Nipah Virus Found In Bats In Wayanad: Health Minister Urges People To Be Vigilant

The Kerala Department of Health issued an alert in Wayanad district as a response to the detection of the Nipah virus in samples taken from fruit bats in the region. Health Minister Veena George conveyed to the media that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has officially confirmed the presence of this potentially lethal virus in the specimens collected from fruit bats in the Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery regions of Wayanad.

Nipah Virus Found In Bats In Wayanad: Health Minister Urges People To Be Vigilant

This announcement comes approximately a month after the Nipah scare subsided in Kozhikode district, with State Health Minister Veena George now reporting that recent tests carried out by the ICMR on bats from the adjacent Wayanad district have yielded positive results for the virus.

During her media briefing, Minister George said that the samples obtained from bats in Sulthan Bathery and Manathavady areas in Wayanad district have returned positive for the Nipah virus. She stressed the importance of heightened vigilance among healthcare professionals, underlining the need for an unwavering and cautious approach in their routine patient examinations.

It is noteworthy that earlier in September, suspicions of a Nipah outbreak arose in Kozhikode when two patients displayed symptoms resembling Nipah infection. At that time, Kozhikode had already witnessed two Nipah-related fatalities and six confirmed cases. Over a thousand samples were subsequently dispatched for extensive testing.

For the unversed, the Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans, with bats being one of its natural hosts. Such findings necessitate immediate attention due to the virus's ability to cause severe illness in humans, including symptoms ranging from fever, headache, and respiratory issues to encephalitis, leading to fatal outcomes in some cases. Given the gravity of the situation, the Health Minister's directives serve as a crucial measure to safeguard public health.
