Kerala Weather Alert: IMD Predicts Early Monsoon This Time
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the southwest monsoon is set to arrive in Kerala within the next four to five days, significantly ahead of its typical June 1st schedule. This development could mark the earliest onset of the monsoon on the Indian mainland since 2009, which saw the monsoon begin on May 23rd. The IMD, in a recent afternoon update, confirmed, "Conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon onset over Kerala during next 4-5 days."
Historically, the monsoon season ushers in by June 1st, reaching full coverage across India by July 8th, and commences its withdrawal from northwest India by September 17th, concluding by October 15th. The past years have seen varied onset dates, with the monsoon beginning on May 30th last year, and other years such as June 8th in 2023, May 29th in 2022, and so forth, showcasing the fluctuating nature of monsoon timings.

Anticipating Above-Normal Rainfall
In April, the IMD predicted that the 2025 monsoon season would experience above-normal cumulative rainfall. This forecast effectively dispels concerns over El Niño conditions, which are typically linked to reduced rainfall levels in the Indian subcontinent. Rainfall is categorized based on its percentage relative to a 50-year average of 87 cm, with different ranges defining conditions from 'deficient' to 'excess.' It's expected that this year's monsoon will fall within the 'normal' to 'above normal' range, bringing much-needed relief and resources to various sectors across the country.
The monsoon plays a pivotal role in India's agricultural sector, which not only supports approximately 42.3 per cent of the population but also contributes 18.2 per cent to the national GDP. Beyond agriculture, the monsoon is essential for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water and power generation throughout India. The early arrival of the monsoon this year is eagerly anticipated for its potential positive impact on these vital areas.
The timely and accurate forecasting of the monsoon's onset is crucial for farmers and agricultural planners, allowing for optimal preparation and sowing activities. With the IMD's advanced notice, stakeholders across various sectors can make informed decisions, ensuring better resource management and potentially mitigating risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns.
