Kerala Piravi 2024: God's Own Country Celebrates Its Foundation Day Today
Kerala Piravi, also known as Kerala Day, will be celebrated on 1st November 2024. This day, seen as Kerala's birthday, is enthusiastically observed by the people of Kerala to mark the formation of the state.
Before unification, Kerala was divided into three regions: Travancore, Malabar, and Cochin. These regions were united into an autonomous state on 1st November 1956.

The term 'piravi' in Malayalam translates to 'birth', symbolising Kerala's creation as an independent state within the Republic of India on this day in 1956. Since then, 1st November has been celebrated annually as Kerala Day by the residents of Kerala.
History of Kerala Piravi
After India's independence, the regions of Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar remained distinct territories rather than a unified state. Malabar included areas like Kasaragod, Kannur, and Thalassery, while Travancore covered the southern region and Cochin the central area.
In 1956, these three regions were merged to form Kerala under the State Reorganisation Act, leading to the commemoration of 1st November as Kerala Day, or Kerala Piravi.
How Kerala Piravi is Celebrated
People celebrate the day by wearing traditional attire such as dhoti shirts, settu mundu, and kasavu sarees. Schools and institutions across Kerala commemorate Kerala Day with grand celebrations.
Various competitions are held annually, including Malayala Bhasha Varam (Malayalam Language Week), debates, quizzes on Kerala Piravi, and other Kerala-themed events.
A key highlight is the President's Trophy Boat Race at Kovalam, where winners and runners-up receive trophies and cash prizes.
