Kerala Holiday: Banks, Govt Offices Shut, Schools Out, and 10-Day Onam Bash

Alright, folks in God's Own Country, buckle up for a proper vishramam (rest) because this week is pretty much one long, delicious holiday sandwich, and we're all taking a big bite!

So, here's the deal for this first week of September 2025. If you had any grand plans to run to a government office or sort out some urgent bank work between Thursday and Saturday, well, you might want to sit down for this.

The Holiday Line-Up:

First Onam - Thursday (4th Sep): The festivities kick off! Government offices and banks will be closed as the first of the Onam celebrations begins. Time to start plotting your flower carpet (Pookalam) designs.

Thiruvonam & Milad-i-Sherif - Friday (5th Sep): This is the big one! It's a double whammy. The main day of Thiruvonam coincides with Milad-i-Sherif (the birthday of Prophet Muhammad). This means a definite statewide holiday. It's the day for the grand Sadhya (feast), family time, and reflection. Absolutely everything will be shut.

Third Onam (Avittom) - Saturday (6th Sep): Just in case you needed more time to recover from that massive banana-leaf meal, Avittom ensures the holiday spirit continues through the weekend. Banks and government institutions will remain closed.

So, in short, for anyone dealing with official work: Consider your week done and dusted by Wednesday evening!

But the real winners in all of this? The kids!

While the rest of us get a lovely long weekend, school students across Kerala are living the dream. Despite some murmurs here and there, the government, with Education Minister V. Sivankutty himself, has put its foot down. No changes to the holiday plan!

The kids got off way back on August 27th after their exams and are enjoying a whopping 10-day holiday stretch. They don't have to even think about school until Monday, September 8th. That's a solid week and a half of sleeping in, playing in the rain, visiting grandparents, and probably driving their parents a little crazy.

So there you have it. Kerala is officially in celebration mode. It's a time for joy, feasts, and togetherness. Any urgent work can patiently wait on hold until next week.
