Kerala Man Feared Dead In Russia-Ukraine War: Family Seeks Official Confirmation
In a heart-wrenching development emerging from the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone, a family in Thrissur, Kerala, is grappling with the presumed death of 31-year-old Binil Babu, a native of Kuttanellur. The devastating news was conveyed through a verbal notification from the Indian Embassy in Russia, relayed by Babu’s wife, Joicy. According to the report, Ukrainian forces are believed to have killed Babu. However, despite the grim message, there has been a troubling absence of formal communication from either the Indian Embassy or the Non-Resident Keralite Affairs (NoRKA) officials, leaving crucial details about the time, location, and circumstances of his death shrouded in uncertainty.

A Desperate Journey for Employment
Binil Babu and his cousin, Jain Kurien, both hailing from Thrissur, ventured to Russia in April 2024 in search of better job opportunities. Initially promised employment in canteens through an agent, their hopes were dashed when the jobs did not materialize. As their prospects dwindled, the two young men made the fateful decision to acquire Russian citizenship and enlist in the Russian army, seeking stability and livelihood in an increasingly dire situation.
The two families were rocked by the news on December 16 when Binil and Jain informed their loved ones that they had been deployed to the warfront. At that moment, they hinted at the grim possibility that they might never return.
An Injured Youth and Rising Fears
Jain Kurien, the second young man caught in the crossfire of this conflict, has not fared much better. Reports emerged that Kurien sustained injuries during combat and underwent surgery. He was subsequently transferred to Moscow for further treatment. This distressing development underscored the harsh and dangerous reality faced by these young men, far from their homes and caught up in a foreign war.
The Non-Resident Keralite Affairs (Norka) department, which has been closely monitoring the situation, admitted that, despite multiple inquiries, no official confirmation regarding Binil Babu’s fate has been received from the Indian Embassy. This lack of communication has left the grieving family in limbo, unable to gain closure or even basic details about the circumstances surrounding their loved one's presumed death.
A Family's Unimaginable Grief
Binil Babu’s wife, Joicy, is now enduring unimaginable sorrow. She recently gave birth to their child, a moment Babu had longed to witness but tragically never had the chance. His presumed death has cast an insurmountable shadow over their lives, while the family awaits official confirmation of his fate.
This incident is part of a larger, painful narrative involving Keralites caught in the conflict. Another young man from Thrissur, Sandeep Chandran, was also killed in the war last August. This series of losses highlights the dire consequences of international conflicts on ordinary lives, far from the frontlines of geopolitical disputes.
Efforts for Release and Lack of Acknowledgment
The intervention of various parties has been ongoing in a bid to secure the release of these men. The head of the Orthodox Syrian Church, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III Catholicos, personally addressed the matter with the Russian Ambassador to India, further underscoring the emotional and social stakes of the situation.
Despite emerging reports of Binil Babu’s death since Wednesday of last week, the absence of any formal acknowledgment or confirmation by the embassy or the government has prolonged the family's grief and anguish. The community is deeply concerned, as the family’s suffering continues without clarity or closure.
The Impact on Families and Communities
This tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the human toll that international conflicts take on individuals and their families. For the people of Thrissur and beyond, Binil Babu’s presumed death is more than just a personal tragedy; it is a powerful symbol of the far-reaching consequences of war.
As the family waits for official confirmation, they are left to navigate the emotional turmoil of an uncertain future. The loss of a loved one in such a brutal, far-off conflict calls attention to the importance of timely and transparent communication from government bodies, especially when citizens are caught in the crossfire of international crises. The hope for closure, while essential, seems elusive, but the community stands in solidarity with the grieving families, holding onto the hope that answers will eventually come.
