A 28-year-old resident trainee doctor, Shahna, ended her life after her fiance, E A Ruwise, backed out. According to the reports, the young doctor took this unfortunate decision of suicide because her family could not meet exorbitant dowry demands. The ex-couple were studying at the same institute, where they fell in love and decided to marry each other.

As per the police report, days after the marriage was called off, and when Shahna was expected to report on duty, her colleagues found her unconscious at the post-graduate students' hostel. Later, doctors declared her dead.

Initially, the Kerala Police started the probe for unnatural death and will impose the sections after the autopsy report. The Police is likely to file a case, under Section 306: Abetment of suicide, against Ruwise for Shahna's unnatural death, said reports.

According to the reports, the Police also recovered a suicide note near Shahna's dead body, in which, she has accused Ruwise and his family of demanding exorbitant dowry and assets.

The Police said both the doctors were friends and wanted to marry, but Ruwise stepped back after the girl's family refused to fulfill his alleged demands. Shahna's neighbor in the Nellanad village in Venjaramoodu, Thiruvananthapuram, as quoted by the Indian Express said, "The marriage was fixed and she was very happy. Her family was willing to give Rs 50 lakh, 50 sovereigns of gold, and a car. But Ruwise reportedly demanded 150 sovereigns of gold, 15 acres of land, and a BMW car. Shahna's family could not meet such a demand as they did not have any income other than a house situated on 15 cents of land, which her mother might have planned to sell off for the daughter's marriage,'' he said.

"When Ruwise refused to marry her because of dowry, she was mentally shattered. Since the wedding was announced, she could not face others after the incident. We have learned he had even publicly insulted her in front of other students and colleagues,'' he said.
