40-Year-Old Pilgrim Dies After Jumping Off Flyover at Sabarimala

In a tragic incident at Sabarimala, Kumar, a 40-year-old devotee from Kanakapura, Ramanagara district, lost his life after plunging from the temple's roof. This sorrowful event occurred just days after a group of six, including Kumar, embarked on a pilgrimage to the revered site. Described as a plasterer by profession, Kumar had recently observed a stringent fast as part of his spiritual journey before deciding to end his life in such a distressing manner. The shocking act was recorded on a mobile phone by another devotee present at the scene.

In the sacred town of Sabarimala, known for its ability to absolve sins for those who visit with devotion, the community is mourning the loss of one of their own. Kumar, identified as a resident of Madduramma Street in Kanakapura, took the drastic step of suicide by leaping from the Sabarimala temple's roof.

Despite immediate first aid at the Sabarimala Sannidan Hospital and swift transportation to Kottayam Medical College, Kumar succumbed to his injuries en route. The motivations behind his heartbreaking decision remain a mystery, leaving many to ponder the intense personal struggles he may have faced.

The incident not only cast a shadow over the spiritual haven but also marked a grim milestone, as Kumar's death became the 20th casualty this year among the pilgrims visiting Sabarimala. Indeed, just two days prior to this incident, another devotee named Jagan Sampath from Tamil Nadu met his end after collapsing on the grounds of the temple. Despite immediate medical attention, Sampath's life could not be saved, underscoring the unpredictable and often perilous nature of such pilgrimages.

Following this incident, Kumar's family traveled to Sabarimala to complete the necessary formalities, including the post-mortem, before bringing his body back to Kanakapura for final rites. The Sabarimala police station has recorded a case regarding Kumar's suicide, reflecting the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances that led to such a desperate act. This event has inevitably left the other pilgrims who accompanied Kumar to Sabarimala in a state of shock and confinement, as they grapple with the loss of their fellow devotee.
