As per the Varaha Purana, during the Treta Yuga, Lord Sri Rama, Sita Devi, and Lakshmana stayed here while returning from Lankapuri. The temple, dedicated to Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshmana, also features a sub-shrine for Anjaneya. Built by the Cholas in the 10th century AD, it reflects the architectural style of that period.
