What Are BHISHM Cubes And How Might It Support Ukraine's Defense?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented four BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita & Maitri) Cubes to the Ukrainian government on Friday during his landmark visit to Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Modi for the BHISHM Cubes, which are expected to significantly enhance the speed of treatment for the injured amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
This innovative mobile hospital, developed in India for disaster management, is part of the Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri (BHISHM) project. The Aarogya Maitri Cubes represent the first-ever mobile hospital designed specifically for emergencies.

The BHISHM Cube is a lightweight portable hospital weighing 720 kg. It can be air-dropped from an Indian Air Force transport aircraft at a height of 1,500 feet using two custom parachutes made by the Air Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) in Agra. Once on the ground, it can be operational within just 12 minutes.
Deployment and Functionality
Inspired by the "Rubik's Cube," these cubes are designed to be easily transported. Each cube weighs less than 20 kg and can be carried by hand for up to one kilometer. This allows for quick deployment in disaster-stricken areas. The cubes are packed into 72 smaller units for transport and can be assembled using various methods such as aircraft and drones.
The portable hospital includes two master cubes that can be combined to accommodate up to 200 survivors. Each master cube contains 36 smaller cubes equipped with advanced tools that enhance disaster response and provide medical aid during emergencies. These tools utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and data analysis for efficient coordination and real-time monitoring.
Medical Facilities and Equipment
The BHISHM Cube is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, including an operating theatre, X-ray machines, blood testing equipment, ventilators, and supplies for treating injuries like gunshot wounds, burns, fractures, and severe bleeding. This makes it crucial during emergencies.
A notable feature of the Cube is its advanced medical equipment tagged with RFID for easy repacking and redeployment. The cutting-edge BHISHM software system, accessible via a tablet, enables operators to quickly locate items, track their usage and expiration dates, ensuring they are ready for future missions.
Cost and Sustainability
Each unit of the BHISHM Cube costs around Rs 1.5 crore. It includes essentials like a small generator, stretchers, modular medical tools, medications, and food supplies. Its sustainability is further enhanced by utilizing solar power and batteries.
The Indian Air Force recently tested the BHISHMA portable hospital effectively. The project was introduced in February 2022 when the Defence Ministry established a task force for this effort. In January 2023 at the Global South Summit, Prime Minister Modi unveiled the 'Aarogya Maitri' initiative through which India aims to offer crucial medical aid to developing nations affected by natural disasters or humanitarian crises.
This mobile hospital represents a significant advancement in disaster management technology. Its rapid deployment capabilities ensure timely medical assistance during emergencies worldwide.
