India Greenlights Vadhavan Port Project: A Leap Towards Global Maritime Prominence
The Central government has approved the Rs 76,000 crore Vadhavan port project in Maharashtra. This decision came soon after the Lok Sabha elections. The Modi government, now in its third term, gave this approval within a few days of starting its tenure.
This is seen as a major achievement for the Shinde government in Maharashtra. Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis stated that the Vadhavan port will be among the top 10 ports in the world. This project is expected to create around 10 lakh jobs in Maharashtra.

The Union Cabinet approved the Rs 76,220 crore Vadhavan port project on Wednesday. This decision followed months of deliberations. The port will be one of India's largest and will serve as a gateway for the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
The cabinet also approved a Rs 7,453 crore viability gap financing (VGF) project. This includes planning for the first set of offshore wind energy projects in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a post on social media about this decision, highlighting its potential to boost economic progress and create large-scale employment opportunities.
The Vadhavan Port Project will be built by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL). This special purpose vehicle is formed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), with shareholdings of 74% and 26% respectively.
Vadhavan Port will be developed as an all-weather Greenfield Deep Draft Major Port. The project cost will cover the development of core infrastructure, terminals, and other commercial infrastructure in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
