How Did A Canal Breach Spark Chaos In Delhi’s Bawana?
A canal breach in Delhi has disrupted water supply to several areas and caused flooding in Bawana. Around 2,000 residents were evacuated, with water treatment operations expected to resume by Friday. The Delhi government is investigating the incident for potential sabotage.
A breach in the channel-lined canal (CLC) in Delhi has disrupted the water supply to four of the city's water treatment plants (WTPs).
The incident has also caused flooding in parts of Bawana, necessitating the evacuation of 2,000 residents.

Repair works are ongoing, but normal operations at the WTPs are expected to resume only by Friday evening. The breach could lead to a significant loss of 60-70 million gallons per day (mgd) of water. This disruption is likely to affect areas such as Dwarka, Palam, and Matiala. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government has initiated an inquiry to determine if sabotage was involved.
Impact on Water Supply
The Munak canal is a crucial channel that transports Yamuna water from Haryana to Delhi. It directly supplies two DJB water treatment plants — Bawana and Haiderpur. The breach was first reported around midnight on Wednesday, and repair efforts are being undertaken by the Haryana irrigation department.
Water supply to parts of southwest Delhi is expected to remain affected until Friday evening. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have blamed the AAP for inadequate maintenance leading to this situation.
Political Reactions
The AAP government has faced criticism from both BJP and Congress over the maintenance of the canal. They have accused AAP of neglecting essential infrastructure, which they claim led to this breach. Meanwhile, the government has ordered an investigation into whether foul play was involved.
Residents in affected areas are experiencing significant inconvenience due to the water shortage. Authorities are working round-the-clock to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
The breach in the CLC canal highlights the importance of regular maintenance and monitoring of critical infrastructure. Ensuring such incidents do not recur will require coordinated efforts between various departments and timely intervention.
