There are others in the virtual alley too, like "Your girlfriend Scarlett, Secret Girlfriend Sua and Your AI Girlfriend, Tsu." Each chatbot offers its own "unique features." Your girlfriend, Scarlett, has the tagline, "Your devoted girlfriend, always eager to please you in every way imaginable." Boyfriend Ben, for example, promotes itself as "a caring virtual boyfriend with a flair for emojis." These chatbots offer freewheeling conversations, which takes the users on a tilting romantic journey.

THE REALITY OF ARTIFICIAL ROMANCE

While these bots may offer virtual companionship, they also evoke many ethical questions, as using them would lead to digital dependence, taking the user further away from real life. Experts say that such "Artificial romance" can cause disastrous consequences for mental wellbeing instead of curing them. The surge in such GPTs rang the alarm bells, and the digital custodians sprang into action. OpenAI's usage policy bans "GPTs dedicated to fostering romantic companionship or performing regulated activities.".

While OpenAI may have clamped down on these romantic Romeos and Juliets, but as technology perfects itself, there will be many more bots offering seemingly more real romantic companionship. This once again exposes the dark underbelly of the realm of artificial intelligence and reminds us of the necessary guardrails.

We humans have our own imperfections; we are emotional, manipulative, kind, and judgmental, but these virtues make us humane. We can get a tailor-made AI girlfriend, but it can never replicate the real feelings and would take us away from reality, which would complicate things. So a virtual chat is fine to kill boredom or to find a new experience, but any long term exposure to such digital buddies can cause complications.
