World Champion Gukesh Wins Rapid Title At Grand Chess Tour 2025 In Zagreb

Reigning World Chess Champion D Gukesh added another prestigious title to his name by winning the rapid section of the Grand Chess Tour 2025 Rapid & Blitz tournament in Zagreb, Croatia, on July 4. The 19-year-old Indian sensation finished with an impressive 14 points, three points clear of his nearest rival, Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland, who secured 11 points. Former world champion Magnus Carlsen placed third with 10 points.

Gukesh's road to victory showcased exceptional determination and skill. After losing his opening match to Duda, he rebounded in stunning fashion with five straight wins-one of which was against Carlsen. The triumph over the Norwegian star marked Gukesh's second victory over him in recent months.

On the final day of the rapid event, Gukesh played solidly, drawing with Anish Giri and Ivan Saric, before clinching the title by defeating Wesley So in the ninth and final round. His final rapid tally stood at six wins, two draws, and just one loss.

What made the win even more remarkable was Gukesh's status going into the event. Ranked only 42nd in the world in rapid chess, he was not seen as a favorite-especially in this faster format. Even Magnus Carlsen had previously cast doubts on his ability to perform in rapid time controls. But Gukesh silenced critics with a commanding display in Zagreb.

Other notable performers included R. Praggnanandhaa of India and Fabiano Caruana of the USA, who both finished in joint fourth place with nine points each.

The blitz portion of the tournament will take place on July 5 and 6. The overall champion of the Grand Chess Tour Zagreb 2025 will be decided based on combined results from both the rapid and blitz events.

Gukesh's latest victory is a major highlight in what has already been a phenomenal year for the teenager, reinforcing his stature as a dominant force on the global chess stage.
