Vinesh Phogat's Appeal Against Paris Olympics 2024 Disqualification Quashed By CAS: Here's A Copy Of Order

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the 50kg category final at the Paris Olympics was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday, according to reports. Vinesh, who was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the second weigh-in on the morning of her gold-medal match, had also requested to be awarded a joint silver medal. However, CAS dismissed both her appeal and her demand for the medal.

CAS Decision and Extension

The ad-hoc division of CAS extended the time limit to deliver its decision till August 16 without specifying reasons for the delay. "The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) matter, an extension until 6:00 pm (Paris time) on Friday, August 16, 2024," a release from the IOA said.

Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling a day after her disqualification. She stated she no longer had the strength to continue in the sport. This marked her third appearance at the Olympics.

Extreme Measures Taken

The world championships bronze-medalist took extreme measures to avoid disqualification. These included cutting her hair, going without food and water, and working out through the night. Her efforts led to severe dehydration, ultimately requiring IV fluids, and her situation garnered widespread sympathy.

Despite these efforts, Vinesh's appeal was not successful. The decision by CAS means she will not receive any medal for her performance at the Paris Olympics.
