Usain Bolt Declares T20 the Perfect Cricket Format, Foresees Global Shift
Usain Bolt, the world-renowned sprinter and record holder for the 100m and 200m sprints, has recently expressed his enthusiasm for the T20 cricket format, describing it as his favorite. Bolt, who had aspirations of becoming a fast bowler during his youth in Jamaica, now serves as the ambassador for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. This role allows him to engage with the sport he has always been passionate about. His involvement comes seven years after retiring from an illustrious athletic career, yet his charm and appeal remain as strong as ever.

Bolt's connection to cricket runs deep, with his father being a significant influence due to his profound love for the game. Despite not fulfilling his dream of becoming a cricketer, Bolt finds joy in being closely associated with cricket through his ambassadorial role. His recent visit to New York, one of the three American mainland venues for the T20 World Cup and the host for the India-Pakistan match on June 9, rekindled his excitement for the sport.
Despite a busy schedule that includes traveling the world for various engagements, Bolt tries to keep up with cricket, particularly T20 matches. He acknowledges not being able to watch as much cricket as he would like but remains updated on major tournaments like the IPL. Bolt's preference for T20 cricket stems from its fast-paced nature, which he believes perfectly blends the strategic elements of Test matches with the dynamism of one-day games.
The popularity of T20 cricket in the Caribbean is evident, with many elite West Indian cricketers gaining recognition for their performances in T20 leagues worldwide. Bolt sees this trend as indicative of the format's bright future in the region, attributing its appeal to the excitement and speed of the game.
As the USA hosts a global cricket event for the first time, Bolt is optimistic about the sport's growth potential in the country. He believes that hosting significant events can spark interest among local communities and encourage more Americans to embrace cricket.
Bolt also shared memories of watching cricket legends like Wasim Akram, Courtney Walsh, and Curtly Ambrose during his childhood in Jamaica. Among current cricketers, he admires Virat Kohli for his standout performances. Additionally, Bolt humorously mentioned a friendly rivalry with Chris Gayle, joking about who would win in a 100m race between them.
Looking forward to visiting India again since his last trip in 2014, Bolt's connection with cricket and his admiration for its players—past and present—underscores his passion for the sport. As T20 cricket continues to captivate audiences worldwide, Bolt's role as an ambassador will undoubtedly contribute to its growing popularity, especially in regions like the Caribbean and potentially in new markets like the USA.
