Shabnam Shakils heroics dash UP Warriorzs playoff hopes in WPL
Shabnam Shakils three-wicket haul helped Gujarat Giants defeat UP Warriorz by eight runs in the Womens Premier League, ending Warriorzs hopes of reaching the playoffs.
In a crucial Women's Premier League (WPL) match, Gujarat Giants defeated UP Warriorz by eight runs, effectively ending the latter's chances of qualifying for the knockout stages. Sixteen-year-old pacer Shabnam Shakil emerged as the star of the show for Gujarat, claiming impressive figures of 3/11. Her exceptional bowling performance overshadowed the brilliance of UP Warriorz's Deepti Sharma, who remained unbeaten on 88 runs off 60 balls.

Warriorz fall short despite Deepti's heroics
UP Warriorz, burdened with a negative net run-rate of -0.371, needed a victory to maintain their slim qualification hopes. However, despite Deepti's valiant effort, the team could only muster 144 for 5 while chasing a target of 153 set by Gujarat Giants. Deepti's knock included nine boundaries, while her teammate Poonam Khemnar contributed 36 runs off 36 balls. However, the Warriorz's early collapse to 35 for 5 proved too much to overcome, and they ultimately fell short of the target.
Shabnam Shakil shines in her second game
Shabnam Shakil, playing only her second match of the season, made a significant impact on the game. She dismissed seasoned campaigners Alyssa Healy, Chamari Athapaththu, and her former India U-19 teammate Shweta Sehrawat, shattering UP Warriorz's hopes of finishing in the top three. Shabnam's high-arm action, pronounced jump, and extra bounce proved too much for the Warriorz batters to handle.
UP Warriorz's spin troika troubles Gujarat Giants
Earlier in the match, UP Warriorz's spin troika of Sophie Ecclestone, Deepti Sharma, and Rajeswari Gayakwad made life difficult for Gujarat Giants. Their combined efforts restricted Gujarat to a total of 152 for 8. Beth Mooney's unbeaten 74 provided some respite for Gujarat, but the team's Indian talent, including Bharati Fulmali, Dayalan Hemlatha, and Tanuja Kanwer, failed to impress with their shot selection and game sense.
Gujarat Giants' victory and UP Warriorz's defeat effectively ended the latter's playoff hopes. Shabnam Shakil's exceptional bowling performance and UP Warriorz's fielding errors proved decisive in determining the outcome of the match. While Deepti Sharma's unbeaten knock showcased her individual brilliance, it was not enough to overcome the team's overall shortcomings. As the WPL continues, teams will need to address their weaknesses and capitalize on their strengths to secure a spot in the knockout stages.
