Russia Hosts BRICS Games Amidst International Sports Exclusion

On Wednesday, the city of Kazan in Russia became the focal point for thousands of athletes from around the globe as it hosted the sixth BRICS Games. This international sporting event, taking place on Russia's independence day, highlights the significant role sports play in the country's national identity. Amidst ongoing political tensions and Russia's exclusion from major international sports events following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the BRICS Games serve as a platform for Russia to assert its stance against what it perceives as unfair treatment by Western entities and international sports organizations.

BRICS Games in Russia Amid Exclusion

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, overseeing the games, emphasized Russia's belief in keeping sports separate from politics, despite feeling targeted politically due to the importance of sports to Russian citizens. Oleg Matytsin, former Russian sports minister, remarked that the BRICS Games are not intended to replace the Olympics but underscored the unique position of the Olympic Games.

The BRICS acronym stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, forming a coalition that has expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Initially established to foster investment opportunities, BRICS has evolved into a geopolitical bloc seen as an alternative to Western dominance. The games have been an annual event since 2017, hosted by the BRICS country holding the rotating chairmanship. This year's games in Kazan mark a significant expansion with 27 sports featured, ranging from traditional events like tennis and wrestling to more unique and emerging disciplines such as "phygital" sports and acrobatic rock n roll.

Organizers anticipate around 4,000 participants in this year's games, which will conclude on June 23. While over 60 countries were invited to compete, the official website lists 91 countries on its medals table. Chernyshenko noted that entries were received from 97 countries. Among these are Abkhazia and South Ossetia—regions recognized by few beyond Russia as independent countries—and Republika Srpska, a constituent entity of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The inclusion of diverse sports such as belt wrestling and Koresh belt wrestling alongside digital renditions of soccer and basketball highlights the BRICS Games' role in promoting a wide array of athletic disciplines. The event not only showcases traditional and emerging sports but also reflects the geopolitical aspirations of its member states. As such, the BRICS Games stand as a testament to Russia's ongoing efforts to maintain its prominence on the international stage through sports amid broader political challenges.
