Rohit's Continued Leadership

The decision to retain Rohit as captain stems from the ongoing recovery of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who sustained an ankle injury in October 2022. Shah explained that since Rohit had been captaining the team in other formats and had recently returned for the Afghanistan series, it made sense to let him continue in the role.

Addressing Concerns about Hardik's Absence

Addressing concerns about the possibility of Hardik's injury affecting the team's performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Shah emphasized the need for a reliable backup captain. He highlighted Rohit's successful leadership in the third T20I against Afghanistan, where he guided the team to a remarkable score of 212/4 despite a challenging start.

Rohit's Proven Abilities

Shah expressed confidence in Rohit's abilities as a captain, citing India's impressive performance in the ODI World Cup, where the team won 10 out of 11 matches. While acknowledging the team's loss in the final, Shah emphasized that it was part of the game and that the better team won.

Promise for the 2024 T20 World Cup

During the function to rename the SCA Stadium, Shah made a bold promise to the audience, stating that under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, India will hoist the Indian flag at the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados. This declaration was made in the presence of several dignitaries, including former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Anil Kumble, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, and members of the Indian team support staff.
