Riyan Parag Breaks New Ground as First Assam Cricketer in India's National Team
Riyan Parag, an all-rounder from Assam, made history by becoming the first cricketer from the state to play for India's senior national team. He debuted against Zimbabwe in a T-20 match held in Harare on Saturday. The Assam Cricket Association celebrated this milestone by posting on X, "A son's dream takes flight, and a father's heart swells with pride! Riyan Parag, you've made Assam proud! And what makes it even more special is receiving his Cap from the person who inspired him the most - his father!"

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also marked the occasion as historic for Assam. He tweeted, "Our very own @ParagRiyan makes his debut in the Indian Cricket Team as he plays his first T20I match for #TeamIndia against Zimbabwe at Harare." He added, "#RiyanParag becomes the first Assamese male cricketer to play for India. Proud moment; may he reach the pinnacle of sporting glory."
Riyan Parag's Journey
Riyan Parag has been a significant player in domestic cricket, representing Assam since 2017. He has also been part of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League since 2018. His inclusion in the Indian national squad for the Zimbabwe tour was announced last month.
The 22-year-old did not bowl in his debut match and was dismissed for just 2 runs off 3 balls in the fifth over. India was chasing Zimbabwe's score of 115 runs but fell short by 13 runs, resulting in an unexpected defeat.
Assam's Cricketing Milestones
Another cricketer from Assam, Uma Chetry, had previously been named in the Indian women's team but has yet to make her international debut. This highlights Assam's growing presence in national cricket.
Riyan Parag was part of India's Under-19 team that won the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. His journey from domestic cricket to international recognition is a testament to his talent and hard work.
Zimbabwe's victory over India in the first T20I of the five-match series was a significant upset. The Indian team, filled with promising young players, was expected to perform better but fell short.
This debut marks a significant achievement for Riyan Parag and serves as an inspiration for aspiring cricketers from Assam and other northeastern states. His journey underscores the potential and talent present in these regions.
The cricketing community and fans across India will be watching Riyan Parag's career closely as he continues to represent Assam and India on larger platforms.
