Rajat Patidar Profile: The Man Who Went From IPL Reject To RCB Captain
Rajat Manohar Patidar, a name that once hovered on the fringes of recognition, has steadily carved a space for himself in Indian cricket. Born on June 1, 1993, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Patidar's journey from domestic stalwart to national team contender has been one of persistence, skill, and timely brilliance.
The Early Grind
Patidar's cricketing foundation was laid in Madhya Pradesh, where he honed his skills as a right-handed batter and an occasional off-break bowler. His first-class debut in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy did not immediately catapult him into the limelight, but steady performances built his reputation as a reliable middle-order batter.
The 2021-22 Ranji Trophy became a turning point in his career. Playing a pivotal role in Madhya Pradesh's maiden Ranji title victory, Patidar's contributions with the bat proved instrumental in scripting history for his state side. His performances underscored his temperament, technical finesse, and ability to rise to the occasion.
IPL Breakthrough
Patidar's IPL journey has been one of resilience and redemption. Initially picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2021 auction, his limited opportunities yielded moderate returns, leading to his release ahead of the 2022 season. But fate had other plans. Called back mid-season as an injury replacement, Patidar turned the tide with one of the most memorable IPL knocks-a breathtaking 112 off 54 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator playoff. This inning not only announced his arrival but also made him the first uncapped player to notch a century in an IPL playoff match.
Since then, Patidar has solidified his position in the RCB lineup, and in a move that underlines his growing stature, he has been appointed captain of the franchise for IPL 2025. This leadership role places him in the company of modern-day greats, and all eyes will be on how he navigates this challenge.
The International Call-Up
Patidar's consistency in domestic and franchise cricket earned him a well-deserved spot in the Indian national team. He made his ODI debut against South Africa on December 21, 2023, followed by his Test debut against England on February 2, 2024. Though still in the early stages of his international career, his technical prowess and adaptability suggest he could become a key figure in India's middle order across formats.
Style Of Play
Patidar's batting is built on a solid foundation of classical strokes, coupled with an aggressive flair that makes him a dangerous proposition in white-ball cricket. His ability to counter-attack under pressure and shift gears seamlessly has made him an asset for any team he represents. While his off-break bowling remains a secondary skill, it adds depth to his overall profile.

With his batting at its peak and leadership responsibilities on his shoulders, Patidar stands at the threshold of greatness, ready to etch his name in Indian cricket's annals.
