PSV Eindhoven Clinches Dutch Soccer Title Following Ajax's Dramatic Late-Season Collapse

PSV Eindhoven clinched the Dutch championship on Sunday, overtaking Ajax in a dramatic title race. Despite Ajax's 2-0 victory over FC Twente, it wasn't enough to surpass PSV, who defeated Sparta Rotterdam 3-1. Malik Tillman scored the decisive third goal for PSV, ensuring their triumph as Ajax's late-season slump cost them the title.

Ajax's Late-Season Collapse

Ajax had a nine-point lead with five games left but faltered with two losses and two draws. This allowed PSV to close the gap and eventually win their 26th Eredivisie title. Luuk de Jong lifted the trophy amid celebrations at Sparta Stadion, expressing disbelief at their comeback.

PSV's title hopes seemed bleak last Sunday when they trailed Feyenoord by two goals early on. However, Noa Lang's stoppage-time goal secured a 3-2 victory. Meanwhile, Ajax suffered a 3-0 defeat to NEC Nijmegen, setting up further drama midweek.

PSV's Remarkable Turnaround

On Wednesday, Ajax drew 2-2 with Groningen after conceding in stoppage time. This allowed PSV, led by former Ajax coach Peter Bosz, to take the top spot for the first time since February. They maintained this lead by winning their last seven matches.

Francesco Farioli, Ajax's coach, was emotional after the game. A video circulated showing striker Wout Weghorst pushing away a camera that got too close to the distraught players. "He sees that I'm in tears and comes to me," Weghorst said in De Telegraaf. "That's emotion."

Champions League Qualification

Both PSV and Ajax secured automatic spots in next season's Champions League. Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson congratulated PSV, acknowledging the unexpected outcome of the season. "It's tough that we didn't make it, but no one expected this before the season started."

PSV's remarkable comeback was sealed with a backdrop of tickertape and jubilant teammates, including American defender Sergiño Dest. De Jong reflected on their journey: "After being nine points behind Ajax, you think you'll never make it," he said in De Telegraaf. "But the fact that you still managed to do it is really crazy."
