Paris Olympics Begin with Dazzling Ceremony Celebrating French Diversity

The city of Paris transformed into a grand amphitheatre, with the Seine River serving as a track for athletes. France showcased its cultural diversity, revolutionary spirit, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage during the opening ceremony of the 33rd Olympic Games on Friday.

Paris Olympics Vibrant Opening

French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Games, marking the start of 16 days of competitions. The ceremony featured a unique Parade of Nations, where athletes from 205 countries and one refugee team sailed down the Seine on boats despite heavy rain.

Iconic Landmarks and Cultural Tributes

The boats passed by iconic landmarks such as the restored Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre Museum, and several Games venues. The Notre Dame Cathedral, which was gutted by fire five years ago, was a significant highlight.

During the segment titled "sisterhood," Hindi was among six languages used in infographics to honour prominent French women. This gesture highlighted France's appreciation for diverse cultures.

Star-Studded Torch Relay

French judo legend Teddy Riner and sprint icon Marie-Jose Perec jointly lit the Olympic cauldron. The cauldron was attached to a giant hot-air balloon that lifted off into the night sky. Before this, Zinedine Zidane handed the torch to Rafael Nadal, who sailed down the Seine with Serena Williams and Carl Lewis.

More than a dozen former French sports stars participated in the torch relay. Charles Coste, the oldest French Olympic champion at 100, handed the flame to Riner and Perec.

Athletes' Parade on the Seine

The six-kilometre parade began from Austerlitz Bridge with 85 boats carrying over 6,800 athletes. The sequence followed the French alphabetical order. Greece led as the spiritual home of the Games, followed by the Refugee team. France, as host country, came last to loud cheers from the home crowd.

The Indian contingent was led by PV Sindhu and A Sharath Kamal. The women wore sarees while men donned kurta-pyjamas in national colours. A total of 78 Indian athletes and officials participated in the ceremony.

Entertainment and Performances

American pop star Lady Gaga was among the first international artists to perform. Artistic director Thomas Jolly helmed the ceremony. The event also featured dance performances on bridges along the parade route.

A mysterious torch-bearer captured attention as he darted around Paris holding the flame. He crossed the Seine on a zip-wire after cabaret performers completed their act.

Political Themes and Historical References

The ceremony included a segment titled "emancipation," paying homage to the 18th-century French Revolution triggered by King Louis XVI's profligacy. A figurine of Marie Antoinette's decapitated torso was part of this act.

Antoinette is infamously quoted saying, "Let them eat cake," when informed about French commoners' financial distress at that time.

Craftsmanship and Medals

A glimpse of Monnaie de Paris workshops was presented to honour Parisian craftsmanship. A total of 5,084 medals are being produced for this edition of the Games, each containing a piece of the Eiffel Tower.

This is Paris's third time hosting the Olympics after 1900 and 1924. India is represented by 117 athletes, including 47 women.

The organisers promised an unforgettable spectacle despite logistical and security challenges. They claimed it would be the biggest in Games history with over 300,000 people watching on-site and billions tuning in on television.
