Paris Transforms into Grand Stage for Olympics Opening Ceremony
Paris transformed into a grand amphitheatre, with the Seine river serving as a track for athletes during the opening ceremony of the 33rd Olympic Games on Friday. The event showcased France's cultural diversity, revolutionary spirit, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage.

The ceremony began with a unique twist as athletes from 205 countries and one refugee team sailed down the Seine on boats. Despite heavy rain, the Parade of Nations proceeded smoothly. French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Games, marking the start of 16 days of competitions.
Highlighting Cultural Diversity
During the segment titled "sisterhood," Hindi was among six languages used in infographics to honour prominent French women. The ceremony also featured a political theme in the "emancipation" segment, paying tribute to the 18th-century French Revolution.
The six-kilometre parade started from Austerlitz bridge, with 85 boats carrying over 6,800 athletes. The sequence followed the French alphabetical order, beginning with Greece and ending with France. The USA and Australia, hosts of the 2028 and 2032 Olympics respectively, preceded France.
Indian Contingent's Participation
The Indian contingent was led by PV Sindhu and A Sharath Kamal, who were flag-bearers. Women wore sarees while men donned kurta-pyjamas in national colours. A total of 78 Indian athletes and officials participated in the ceremony.
The boats passed iconic landmarks like Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum. Notre Dame's restoration after a fire five years ago was highlighted. The parade route featured dance performances on bridges for fans who gathered at various spots.
Artistic Performances and Highlights
American pop star Lady Gaga was among the first international artists to perform. Artistic director Thomas Jolly helmed the ceremony. A mysterious torch-bearer also captured attention as he moved around Paris holding the flame.
A rider on a metal horse galloped down the Seine carrying the Olympic flag. The ceremony included a collage of past Olympic moments intercut with current events. Over two lakh free tickets were distributed aside from more than one lakh sold tickets.
Honouring Craftsmanship
A glimpse into Monnaie de Paris workshops was presented to honour Parisian craftsmanship. A total of 5,084 medals are being produced for the 2024 Games, each containing a piece of the Eiffel Tower.
Cultural events followed the Parade of Nations, lasting nearly two and a half hours. French singer Juliette Armanet performed a song calling for world peace. The organisers aimed to create an unforgettable spectacle despite logistical and security challenges.
This is Paris's third time hosting the Olympics after 1900 and 1924. India is represented by 117 athletes, including 47 women, in this sporting event. The organisers claim this will be the biggest ceremony in Games history, with over 300,000 people watching along the Seine and billions tuning in on television.
