Paris Olympics: India's Women's Table Tennis Team Enters Quarterfinals Defeating Romania
Star player Manika Batra led India to a thrilling 3-2 victory over higher-ranked Romania, securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the women's table tennis team competition at the Paris Olympics on Monday. Despite Romania's comeback to level the score at 2-2, Manika's decisive performance clinched the win for India.
Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath initiated the tie with a strong performance, defeating Adina Diaconu and Elizabeta Samara 11-9, 12-10, 11-7 in doubles. This early success set a positive tone for India. Manika then dominated Bernadette Szocs in straight sets, winning 11-5, 11-7, 11-7, giving India a comfortable 2-0 lead against their fourth-seeded opponents.

India's Quarterfinal Hopes
However, Sreeja faced a tough challenge in her singles match against European champion Samara. Despite winning the first game, she eventually lost 2-3 (11-8, 4-11, 11-7, 6-11, 8-11). This defeat brought Romania back into contention. Archana then faced Bernadette in another singles match. After splitting the first two games (5-11, 11-8), Bernadette won the next two games (11-7, 11-9), pushing the tie to a decider.
In the crucial final match, Manika delivered an outstanding performance by defeating Adina Diaconu in straight sets (11-5, 11-9, 11-9), sealing India's victory. With this win, India advanced to face either the USA or Germany in the quarterfinals.
Historic Achievements
Last week marked a historic moment for Indian table tennis as both Manika and Sreeja reached the round of 16 in the individual event at the Olympics for the first time. Although they couldn't progress further due to higher-ranked opponents, their achievement was significant for Indian table tennis.
The upcoming quarterfinals will see Japan, Poland, France and Thailand also competing on the same side of the draw as India. The Indian team is seeded 11th in this competition but has shown remarkable resilience and skill to reach this stage.
The journey so far has been filled with intense matches and notable victories. The team's performance against Romania showcased their determination and ability to compete against top-ranked teams. As they prepare for their next challenge, fans eagerly await more memorable moments from these talented players.
The Indian team's progress at the Paris Olympics highlights their growing prowess in table tennis on an international stage. Their achievements inspire many young athletes back home and signify a bright future for Indian sports.
