Paris Olympics: India Storm Into Hockey Semis As Great Britain Crumble In A Thriller

India's men's hockey team stormed to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics after a nerve-wracking match against Great Britain, culminating in a 4-2 victory in the penalty shootout.

The match was marked by intense drama, with India playing the majority of the game with just 10 men following a controversial red card to Amit Rohidas.

The match began with Great Britain on the front foot, applying relentless pressure on the Indian defense. Within the first five minutes, Great Britain earned two penalty corners, but the Indian defense, led by PR Sreejesh, stood firm.

The Indian team weathered the early storm, but Great Britain continued to dominate possession. Sreejesh showcased his skills early, making a crucial save against Samuel Ward in the 11th minute, which allowed India to regain some composure.

Towards the end of the quarter, India mounted pressure of their own, earning three consecutive penalty corners, all of which were saved by the British defense.

The second quarter started with more intensity as Sreejesh was called into action again following a midfield error by India. The real turning point of the match occurred in the 17th minute when Amit Rohidas received a straight red card.

The Indian defender, while attempting to run with the ball, accidentally struck Great Britain's Calnan on the head with his stick, which was deemed to be in an unnatural position.

After a brief discussion, the referees decided to send Rohidas off, leaving India with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, India managed to take the lead against the run of play. In the 22nd minute, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner, sending the ball past Great Britain's goalkeeper Payne.

However, the lead was short-lived as Great Britain continued to press, eventually finding an equalizer through Lee Morton in the 27th minute. The teams went into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

The third quarter was dominated by Great Britain, who intensified their attacks, looking to capitalize on their numerical advantage. Sreejesh once again proved to be the difference-maker, pulling off a vital save in the 32nd minute to deny Rupert Shipperly.

India was under immense pressure as the penalty corner count for Great Britain continued to rise, with India primarily focused on defending.

Adding to India's woes, Sumit was handed a green card, temporarily reducing India to nine players. Despite being on the back foot, India's defense, marshaled by Sreejesh, held strong, ensuring the scoreline remained 1-1 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, India began to show more attacking intent, pushing forward in search of a goal. The tension was palpable as both teams looked for a breakthrough.

In the 56th minute, Sreejesh made a spectacular save to deny Calnan, keeping India's hopes alive. With neither team able to find the winning goal, the match headed into a penalty shootout, where the nerves of both sets of players would be tested.

Penalty Shootout: Sreejesh the Hero

The shootout began with Albery stepping up for Great Britain, managing to slot the ball past Sreejesh despite being challenged. Harmanpreet Singh was next for India and calmly equalized, making it 1-1 just before the timer ran out.

Wallace then gave Great Britain the lead again, but Sukhjeet Singh responded with a cool finish to level the scores at 2-2.

The pressure began to show as Great Britain's Williamson missed his attempt, firing the ball wide of the target. Lalit Upadhyay seized the opportunity, putting India in the lead for the first time in the shootout.

The defining moment came when Sreejesh made a crucial save to deny Philip Roper, leaving Rajkumar Pal to take the decisive shot. Rajkumar made no mistake, securing India's place in the semifinals with a 4-2 shootout victory.
Looking Ahead

India's remarkable performance, especially under the challenging circumstances of playing with a man down, has set up a semifinal clash against either Argentina or Germany. This marks the second consecutive time that India has reached the final four in the Olympics, continuing their pursuit of a historic medal.
