Badminton champion Saina Nehwal has announced her divorce from husband and fellow shuttler Kashyap Parupalli. As the news broke, a clip from one of her old interviews has gone viral, where she firmly states that her first priority has always been badminton.

In the resurfaced interview dated February 16, when asked what she would choose between love and her sport, Saina said, "If you had to choose between love and playing badminton professionally at a high level, then badminton would definitely come first. Always put the game first.

As a sportsperson, from what I remember, when I was about five or six, I just kept playing and swimming. I never really thought about guys or anything like that-I was always sporty. To be good at a sport, especially when you're not good enough yet, you have to focus so much to be the best. You need to stay in your own zone because if you spend too much time talking to others, your mind will lose focus."

She further added, "Because of that strictness, I am Saina Nehwal. Today, first of all, forget the world, this is a national thing. You have around 15 years-you're working the best. In 15 years, I was already winning tournaments without a trainer, without a physio, without anything."

In the same interview that has now resurfaced, both Saina and Kashyap were asked, "If you both got a chance to meet your 5-year-old self, what would you say to the young you?"

Saina responded, "Have fun! I'd just say, have fun. If I were 10, probably in 5th grade, then... yeah, maybe put in some effort, take some pressure. I mean, listen to your parents-they always want the best for you."

On Sunday evening, Saina announced her separation via Instagram stories. She wrote,
"Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing - for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time."

The news of their divorce has come as a surprise to fans. Only a few months ago, Kashyap had shared photos from Saina's birthday celebration, giving no hint of any trouble in their marriage.
