Manchester United Sets Unwanted Premier League Record with 15 Losses This Season

Manchester United experienced another setback on Sunday, losing 1-0 to Wolverhampton. This defeat marked their 15th league loss this season, the highest in a single Premier League campaign for the club. The result highlights the ongoing struggles of a team that once dominated English football, winning 13 titles since the Premier League's inception in 1992. However, they have not claimed the championship since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Manchester Uniteds Premier League Loss Record

Last season, United set a record with 14 league defeats. With five matches remaining, Ruben Amorim's squad has already surpassed that number. "We need to fight for wins, score goals and try to get more points," Amorim stated. "This season is going to end like this. We need to take the positives, try to work on the things we need to improve." He also emphasized the importance of preparing for next season's opening game.

Record Losses and Points

The current campaign has seen United suffer their most league losses since the 1989-90 season when they lost 16 times in England's old Division One. According to Premier League statistician Opta, their eighth home defeat this season is the worst since they were beaten nine times in 1962-63.

United is also set to record its lowest-ever points total in the Premier League. The recent loss left them with just 38 points. Their previous lowest was 58 points in the 2021-22 season. Even if they win all remaining matches, they would only reach 53 points this term.

Potential for Redemption

Despite these challenges, Amorim could still achieve success by winning the Europa League. United made a remarkable comeback against Lyon, winning 5-4 on Thursday to reach the semifinals of Europe's second-tier competition. They will face Athletic Bilbao next. Winning the Europa League would secure a spot in next season's Champions League.

The club is also on track for its lowest league finish in Premier League history. Last season, Erik ten Hag's team finished eighth, marking their worst position in 34 years. Currently sitting at 14th place, United is 11 points behind eighth-placed Bournemouth.

In January, Amorim suggested this might be one of the club's weakest teams ever, and their struggles have continued throughout the season. Despite these setbacks, there remains hope for a positive outcome if they can secure victory in European competition.
