Man City, Chelsea, and Newcastle Secure Champions League Spots Amid Aston Villa's Disappointment

Manchester City, Chelsea, and Newcastle clinched the final Champions League spots on a thrilling last day of the Premier League season. Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest were the major disappointments, missing out on the top five. Villa felt hard done by after a disallowed goal against Manchester United, eventually losing 2-0 at Old Trafford. A draw would have sufficed for Unai Emery's side as Newcastle lost 1-0 to Everton.

Champions League Spots Secured by Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle

Chelsea secured their Champions League return with a 1-0 victory over Forest, ending a two-year absence. City finished third after defeating Fulham 2-0. Arsenal came second behind champions Liverpool. Villa's frustrations grew when Emiliano Martinez was sent off before halftime for fouling Rasmus Hojlund, leaving them with ten men against United's pressure.

Villa's Disappointment

Morgan Rogers thought he had turned the game in Villa's favour by capitalising on Altay Bayindir's error, but celebrations were halted as referee Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle. This meant VAR couldn't intervene. Video replays didn't clearly show if Bayindir had control of the ball. Villa's woes worsened when Amad Diallo scored in the 76th minute, followed by Christian Eriksen's penalty.

Emery sarcastically applauded and confronted the referee post-match. Despite this, Villa qualified for the Europa League in sixth place, while Manchester United ended up 15th in the league.

Newcastle's Narrow Escape

Newcastle nearly missed out on Champions League qualification after Carlos Alcaraz scored for Everton at St James' Park. Starting the day in fourth, they dropped out of the top five but ended fifth due to results at Old Trafford, edging Villa on goal difference.

Chelsea, a two-time Champions League winner, returned to Europe's elite competition after Levi Colwill's goal secured fourth place against Forest. Chelsea last won the Champions League in 2021 but missed qualification in recent seasons under American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Chelsea's Comeback

Their return signals progress as Enzo Maresca's team aims for silverware in the Conference League final against Real Betis. Forest finished seventh and will play in the Conference League next season.

City will participate in next season's Champions League despite ending this one without a trophy for the first time in eight years. Their title defence faltered early, and they exited the Champions League prematurely. Crystal Palace defeated them in the FA Cup final last weekend.

City's Consolation

City still has a chance at silverware in June's Club World Cup in the US. Guardiola focused on securing Champions League qualification as Ilkay Gundogan and Erling Haaland scored against Fulham to finish on a high note.

Liverpool celebrated their title win with fans at Anfield as Virgil van Dijk lifted the trophy amid fireworks. Crystal Palace almost spoiled it, but Mohamed Salah equalised late for a 1-1 draw. Arsenal finished second again after beating Southampton 2-1 with Martin Odegaard's late winner.

Liverpool's Triumph

Tottenham ended their domestic campaign poorly despite winning the Europa League midweek. They lost 4-1 to Brighton after leading through Dominic Solanke's penalty. Ange Postecoglou's team finished 17th but will play Champions League football next season thanks to their Europa League victory.
