Maharashtra Kesari Wrestling Competition Concludes in Chaos as Referee is Kicked by Loser
The 67th Maharashtra Kesari wrestling competition ended with controversy as disputes arose over referee decisions. The event, held in Ahilyanagar, witnessed heated moments involving wrestlers and officials. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol were present during the tournament. The competition's conclusion was marred by incidents involving two wrestlers who reacted aggressively to their losses.

In the semi-final match of the mat category, Pune-based wrestler Prithviraj Mohol was declared the winner against Shivraj Rakshe. Rakshe, a two-time Maharashtra Kesari champion, contested the decision, claiming his shoulders never touched the mat during Mohol's manoeuvre. "Despite this, the referee ruled that I had lost. I was abused when I was arguing my case and that is why took this step of kicking," Rakshe stated.
Referee Decisions and Reactions
Rakshe's actions led to a three-year suspension by the wrestling body. He argued for similar penalties against referees and expressed intentions to challenge the verdict legally. Sandip Bhondve, working president of the Maharashtra Wrestling Organisation, supported the referee's decision, stating that both side referees and the mat chairman agreed with the ruling. Rakshe's appeal under article 31 of United World Wrestling was not entertained.
The final match saw Mahendra Gaikwad leave with 16 seconds remaining, knowing he couldn't close the points gap against Mohol. Gaikwad later verbally abused referees and received a three-year suspension as well. Bhondve confirmed both suspensions and mentioned concerns about referees' willingness to officiate future tournaments due to fear of similar incidents.
Controversial Opinions and Future Implications
Former Maharashtra Kesari winner Chandrahar Patil criticised the referee's decision in Rakshe's match, suggesting drastic measures should have been taken against the official. "Rakshe has been a wrestler for more than 15 years. In just 10 seconds, his career has been destroyed due to the mistake of a referee," Patil remarked. He also contested elections from Sangli on a Shiv Sena UBT ticket but lost his deposit.
Noted coach Kaka Pawar echoed Patil's sentiments, asserting that the referee failed to verify if Rakshe's fall was legitimate. These opinions highlight ongoing debates about officiating standards in wrestling competitions and their impact on athletes' careers.
Mohol emerged victorious in this prestigious event, marking a significant achievement in his wrestling journey. "I cannot say anything about the decisions of the referees. The decision of the referees is final. I am a wrestler and I have done my job," Mohol commented on his win.
The incidents at this year's Maharashtra Kesari competition have sparked discussions about fairness and conduct in sports events. As stakeholders reflect on these issues, there may be calls for reforms to ensure transparency and accountability in officiating future tournaments.
