The IBA argued that both Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting had competitive advantages over other female competitors based on gender eligibility tests. Carini, who was devastated by her loss, explained she had to withdraw due to severe nose pain. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also raised concerns about athletes with "genetically male" characteristics competing in women's categories.

Khelif is a distinguished boxer who earned a silver medal at the 2022 world championships but was banned from last year's women's world boxing championship due to alleged excessive testosterone levels.
