Amit Panghal, Jaismine, Preeti Face Early Exit at Paris Olympics

Amit Panghal's campaign at the Paris Olympics ended similarly to his Tokyo Games experience, with another pre-quarterfinal exit. Debutants Jaismine Lamboria and Preeti Pawar were also eliminated on Tuesday. Panghal, 28, lost 1-4 in a split decision to Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba in the 51kg Round of 16 bout, an opponent he had previously defeated during his Commonwealth Games title run in 2022.

Debutants' Struggles

Jaismine Lamboria, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, faced a tough challenge in her maiden Olympic campaign. She was defeated by Tokyo silver medallist Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines with a 0-5 unanimous decision in the 57kg Round of 32 bout. Despite her height advantage, Lamboria struggled to connect punches as Petecio expertly dodged her attacks and landed effective counters.

Preeti Pawar delivered the standout performance of the day despite her loss. She went down by a narrow 2-3 split verdict against reigning Pan American Games champion and world silver medallist Yeni Marcela Arias of Colombia in the 54kg pre-quarterfinal bout. The 20-year-old Asian Games bronze medallist made an impressive comeback after losing the first round but couldn't sway all judges despite her late surge.

Panghal's Defensive Approach

Panghal, who had qualified for the Paris Olympics in the last qualifier, received an opening round bye similar to his Tokyo experience. The 2019 world championship silver medallist faced immediate pressure from Chinyemba, the reigning African Games champion. Panghal's defensive strategy allowed Chinyemba to take control as the aggressor.

In the second round, Panghal attempted to attack but struggled to land effective punches against Chinyemba's persistence. Despite engaging in significant exchanges in the final three minutes, Panghal couldn't overcome Chinyemba's intensity and lost the bout.

Expectations and Outcomes

Panghal had been away from the national team since his Tokyo exit and was selected for the final Olympic qualifying event after Deepak Bhoria failed to secure a quota in previous qualifiers. Given a favourable draw, expectations were high for Panghal to reach the medal rounds. However, his inability to counter-attack effectively and his defensive approach led to his early exit.

Lamboria had dropped from her original 60kg weight class to reclaim India's 57kg quota after Parveen Hooda was suspended for a whereabouts failure last month. Despite this adjustment, Lamboria couldn't match Petecio's speed and skill in their bout.

Panghal's struggle with footwork and inability to respond effectively to Chinyemba's aggression marked a disappointing performance. He trailed on three cards after the opening round and couldn't recover despite trying to apply pressure in subsequent rounds.

The Indian boxers' performances at the Paris Olympics highlighted both challenges and moments of promise. While Panghal and Lamboria faced tough opponents and early exits, Preeti Pawar's fearless display against a seasoned competitor showed potential for future success.

The outcomes at Paris reflect both the high expectations placed on experienced athletes like Panghal and the learning curve for debutants like Lamboria and Pawar. Their experiences will undoubtedly contribute to their growth and preparation for future competitions.
