India Will Host Olympics 2036: IOA Chief PT Usha

PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), declared the organization's unwavering determination to bring the 2036 Summer Games to India, despite facing internal discord within the IOA, particularly over her conflict with Executive Council (EC) members. The discord centers around the refusal of 12 EC members to confirm Raghuram Iyer's appointment as IOA CEO, a decision Usha made in January. She emphasized, "Despite some internal challenges within the IOA, our commitment to hosting the 2036 Summer Games remains steadfast. The IOA remained in continuous contact with the IOC and I am optimistic that India will be viewed as a gracious host," demonstrating their ongoing dialogue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and a positive outlook towards India's capability as a host.

In an ambitious move, India has taken a significant step towards hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games by submitting a 'Letter of Intent' to the IOC's Future Host Commission. This action follows months of informal discussions and marks India's formal expression of interest in organizing the prestigious event. The submission, made by the IOA on October 1, was confirmed by a sports ministry source. This development was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who last year expressed his government's desire to host the Olympics, reinforcing the nation's commitment to this goal.

The initiative to host the Games has received high-level endorsement and active involvement, including regular interactions with IOC President Thomas Bach and officials from the Future Host Commission. "During the IOC session last year, our PM Narendra Modi put forward his vision of India hosting the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 2036. Since then we have maintained regular communication with the IOC president Thomas Bach and the officials of the Future Host Commission," Usha highlighted. India's engagement extended to participation in executive and observer programs at the Paris Olympics, further cementing its intent and readiness to host the 2036 Games.

However, the journey towards becoming the host nation involves overcoming competition from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey, all vying for the opportunity to organize this global sporting event. Despite the competitive landscape, India's submission of the 'Letter of Intent' progresses its status from 'Informal Dialogue' to 'Continuous Dialogue' in the IOC's selection process. This stage includes a feasibility study by the IOC to assess the progress of projects related to hosting the Games in India. The next steps involve entering 'Targeted Dialogue' and submitting a formal bid specific to the 2036 edition, evaluated by the Future Host Commission, culminating in the election of the host nation.

The decision on the 2036 Games host will be pending until after the IOC elections next year, leaving ample time for India to bolster its bid and demonstrate its capabilities as a potential host nation. With a clear pathway laid out by the IOC for selecting the host city, India's early expressions of interest and ongoing preparations underscore its serious aspiration to welcome the world for the 2036 Summer Games.
