Olympic Victory and Romance: Huang Ya Qiong's Double Celebration in Paris

China's badminton player Huang Ya Qiong celebrated a double victory at the Olympics on Friday. She and her partner Zheng Siwei triumphed over South Korea's Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun with scores of 21-8, 21-11 in the mixed doubles final, completing an unbeaten run in Paris. Following the match, Huang was surprised by a wedding proposal from Li Yuchen, another member of China's badminton team.

Gold and Love for Huang in Paris

"For me, the proposal is very surprising because I have been preparing for the game," Huang said through an interpreter. "Today I am an Olympic champion and I got proposed to, so that's something I didn't expect."

China's Dominance in Mixed Doubles

Huang and Zheng, who were silver medalists at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, went undefeated throughout the tournament. They won all three group matches to secure the top seed in the quarterfinals and finished with a perfect 6-0 record without dropping a game. Zheng reflected on their journey, saying, "I think it must be happier for her. Last time it was purely for my proposal, but this time is basically double lucky things happening at the same time."

Japan's Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino secured the bronze medal by defeating South Korea's Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung with scores of 21-13, 22-20. Despite their success, Watanabe expressed some disappointment: "The bronze medal is not the best. I wanted the gold medal, but this is better than nothing."

Historical Success for China

China has consistently excelled in mixed doubles badminton at the Olympics. The country has now won gold in back-to-back Olympics and five out of eight times since it became a medal event in Atlanta in 1996. Wang Yilyu retired after winning gold in Tokyo with Huang Dong Ping. In Paris, Huang Dong Ping teamed up with Feng Yan Zhe but lost to Zheng and Huang in the quarterfinals.

In women's doubles badminton, China is assured of both gold and silver medals. Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan will compete against Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning in an all-China final on Saturday.

Zheng shared his thoughts on their achievement: "I got engaged three years ago after losing in the final and consider this a better experience for her partner." This sentiment highlights how this victory holds special significance beyond just winning a medal.

The success of Huang Ya Qiong and Zheng Siwei adds to China's impressive track record in Olympic badminton. Their triumph not only brings glory to their nation but also marks a personal milestone for Huang with her unexpected engagement.
