Harmanpreet Kaur Reflects on Missed Chances as India Falls Short Against Australia in T20 World Cup
India's captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, expressed disappointment over missed opportunities during her 63-run partnership with Deepti Sharma. India lost by nine runs to Australia in a crucial Women's T20 World Cup match. This defeat means India's semifinal hopes now hinge on the New Zealand-Pakistan match. A New Zealand win would eliminate India, but a Pakistan victory could see India advance.

India struggled to chase down 152, finishing at 142 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Harmanpreet, who scored an unbeaten 54 off 47 balls with six boundaries, noted, "The only thing is, when Deepti and I were batting, that time we were not able to utilise a few loose balls. We could have controlled the boundaries. I think we were still in the game." She acknowledged Australia's experience and ability to win tight matches.
Fielding and Experience
Harmanpreet highlighted Australia's superior fielding as a key difference between the teams. "I think the difference between them and us is their fielding. They didn't give us easy runs. I think they have definitely the experience. They have played so many World Cups together," she remarked. She praised Australia's consistent performance in major tournaments.
Despite the setback, Harmanpreet remains hopeful about India's chances of reaching the semifinals but acknowledged that only the best teams will qualify. "We knew this was a difficult tournament. Whatever was in our hands, we were trying to do that. But that is something which is not in our control," she stated. She added that if India gets another chance to play, it would be welcome.
Australia's Resilience
Australia's stand-in captain, Tahlia McGrath, commended her team's resilience against India's strong challenge. "We want to win every game we play. We knew it was going to be a really big challenge for us today. They came really hard at us. I am just really proud of the group. We have our nerve at the end there," she said.
McGrath also addressed the challenges posed by injuries within the team, especially with regular captain Alyssa Healy sidelined. "Obviously, nobody likes injuries, especially to some of the big players. An injury to a captain is always tough," she commented after stepping in as captain.
India's journey in this tournament now depends on external factors beyond their control. The outcome of other matches will determine if they get another opportunity to compete for a spot in the semifinals.
