France Captain Griedge Mbock Misses Euro 2025 Opener Against England Due to Injury

France will face England in their opening match at the Women's European Championship without their captain, Griedge Mbock. The Paris Saint-Germain defender is sidelined due to a right calf injury. She trained separately from her teammates two days before the match in Zurich. Coach Laurent Bonadei confirmed her absence on Friday.

Mbock Out of Euro 2025 Opener vs England

Mbock's injury means she will not participate in the game against England. "Unfortunately, Griedge still feels a bit of discomfort in her calf so we won't take any risks," Bonadei stated. "The tournament has only just started and she needs specific care. She will be with us tomorrow but not on the field, unfortunately for her and for us."

France's Upcoming Matches

Following the match against England, France will play against Wales, who are making their tournament debut, on Wednesday. Their final Group D match is scheduled four days later against the Netherlands. Bonadei expressed optimism about Mbock's quick return to the team.

The 30-year-old Mbock has been a key player for France, earning 92 caps since her debut 12 years ago. She has started in 81 of those matches. In her absence, Alice Sombath or Thiniba Samoura might step into the defensive role, while Sakina Karchaoui could assume the captaincy.

Team Dynamics and Leadership

Karchaoui highlighted Mbock's significance to the team, saying, "Griedge is someone who is very important in the group, she is our captain." Despite not playing, Mbock's presence remains influential as she offers support and encouragement to her teammates.

Karchaoui also emphasised the team's collective strength: "But today we also have a strong group and we can count on all the players … that's also our strength, that no one is irreplaceable." This sentiment underscores the depth and unity within the French squad as they navigate the tournament challenges.

As France progresses through the tournament, they aim to adapt and perform strongly despite Mbock's absence. The team's resilience and depth will be crucial as they face formidable opponents in their quest for success at the Women's European Championship.
