Greg Maffei Resigns as CEO of Liberty Media, Owner of Formula 1
Greg Maffei is set to step down as president and CEO of Liberty Media, the owner of Formula 1. The company announced that Maffei will leave his position when his contract ends this year, transitioning to an advisory role. John Malone, the 83-year-old chairman, will temporarily take over as CEO.

"While it's never easy to leave an organization as dynamic as Liberty, I am confident that this is the right time," Maffei, 64, stated. He played a crucial role in Liberty Media's acquisition of F1 in 2017 from Bernie Ecclestone, the long-time rights holder.
Liberty Media's Expansion and Challenges
Since the acquisition, F1 has seen a surge in popularity, partly due to the Netflix series "Drive To Survive." This increased interest is especially notable in the United States, which now hosts three annual races. The Las Vegas Grand Prix is scheduled for next week.
In April, Liberty Media expanded its reach into motorcycle racing by securing a deal valued at approximately $4.5 billion for the MotoGP series. This move signifies the company's intent to diversify its sports portfolio.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Future Prospects
In August, Liberty Media revealed it was under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. The probe concerns the company's rejection of Andretti Global's bid to become F1's 11th team. Maffei mentioned that Liberty Media remains open to new teams joining if they meet specific criteria.
Maffei had previously highlighted "an enormous opportunity to grow the sport" following the F1 takeover. His leadership has been instrumental in navigating these opportunities and challenges during his tenure.
The transition at Liberty Media marks a significant change in leadership as it continues to navigate its expansion and regulatory challenges. The company remains focused on maintaining its growth trajectory in motorsports.
