France in Talks with Italy, Netherlands for 2030 Winter Olympics Speed Skating Events
In a recent development that underscores a growing trend towards cost-effective and collaborative Olympic hosting models, the French candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics has entered discussions with the Netherlands and Italy regarding the possibility of staging speed skating events outside France. This innovative approach was highlighted by International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials in anticipation of their upcoming visit to potential venues in the French Alps and Nice.

Nice, a city renowned for its picturesque coastal views on the French Riviera, lacks the necessary infrastructure to host all ice-based Olympic events. In response, the IOC has advocated for host cities to seek more economical alternatives to constructing new venues. Christophe Dubi, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, shared insights during an online briefing about ongoing conversations with candidates from Italy and the Netherlands, both of which have strong ties to winter sports.
Italy is already preparing to welcome the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, while the Netherlands boasts a rich history in speed skating, having secured six gold medals in the sport during the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The French Alps are poised to be named the host for the 2030 Winter Olympics during an IOC meeting in Paris scheduled for July 23-24, just before the Summer Games commence. Additionally, discussions regarding the host city for the 2034 Winter Games are expected to take place, with Salt Lake City, Utah, emerging as a leading contender.
The selection process by the IOC now favors presenting a single candidate for approval by its members, a strategy aimed at reducing costs and minimizing the risk of corruption scandals associated with vote solicitation. This streamlined approach was evident in November when the French bid was chosen over those from Sweden and Switzerland, despite neither requiring new venue constructions. Notably, the Swedish proposal involved utilizing a bobsled track in Latvia.
Similarly, Italian organizers for the upcoming Winter Games have been encouraged to opt for a bobsled track in Austria or Switzerland instead of renovating an existing facility in Cortina, which would entail significant financial outlay. A precedent for utilizing temporary venues was set with Milan's decision to host speed skating events at a conference center, a move that Dubi affirmed could be replicated in 2030 given the proven feasibility of ensuring high-quality ice conditions.
The IOC delegation is set to commence a five-day tour of France next Monday, culminating in a press conference in Nice. Their findings will contribute to a comprehensive report due in June, which will inform final decisions to be made in Paris regarding future Winter Games hosts.
