Freestyle Chess Event: R Praggnanandhaa Beats World No 1 Magnus Carlsen

In a remarkable display of skill, India's teenage chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa defeated the world number one, Magnus Carlsen, during the fourth round of the Freestyle Chess event in Las Vegas. This victory is seen as a pivotal moment in Praggnanandhaa's career, as he overcame the Norwegian chess legend in just 39 moves. The defeat adds to Carlsen's recent struggles against Indian grandmasters.

Praggnanandhaa demonstrated exceptional control throughout the match, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 93.9%. In contrast, Carlsen managed only 84.9% accuracy. The young Indian grandmaster appeared confident and poised as he faced the five-time world champion. With this win, Praggnanandhaa has now triumphed over Carlsen in all three major time formats: Classical, Rapid, and Blitz.

Carlsen's Tournament Hopes Dashed

The loss to Praggnanandhaa significantly impacted Carlsen's tournament prospects. Following this defeat, he lost to Wesley So in the subsequent round, resulting in his elimination from the top bracket. The tournament featured 16 players divided into two groups of eight. Only the top four from each group advanced to the quarterfinals.

The tournament rules stipulate that players who do not reach the top bracket cannot win the event. Given his recent losses, Carlsen is unlikely to secure a victory in this competition.

Indian Grandmasters Advance

Meanwhile, both R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi have successfully qualified for the quarterfinals. They will face Fabiano Caruana and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, respectively. Unfortunately for Vidit Gujrathi, another Indian participant, he has been eliminated from title contention but will face Magnus Carlsen in the lower bracket.

The quarterfinal pairings are as follows: Praggnanandhaa versus Caruana; Abdusattorov versus Arjun; Aronian versus Nakamura; Niemann versus Sindarov.
