Lockie Ferguson Makes History as New Zealand Concludes T20 WC with Win Over PNG
Lockie Ferguson etched his name into the annals of cricket history with a spellbinding performance that saw him record the most economical spell in T20 Internationals. His exceptional figures of 4-4-0-3 propelled New Zealand to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea in their final match of the World Cup on Monday. Ferguson's achievement placed him alongside Canada's Saad Bin Zafar as the only bowlers to have bowled four maiden overs in a T20I match.

New Zealand's clinical display rounded off their World Cup campaign, which included victories over Oman and PNG, despite earlier setbacks against Afghanistan and co-hosts West Indies leading to their group stage exit. The Kiwi bowlers, spearheaded by Ferguson, were instrumental in dismissing PNG for a paltry 78 runs in 19.4 overs. New Zealand then chased down the target with ease, scoring 79 for three in just 12.2 overs.
The match also saw commendable efforts from PNG, particularly Kabua Morea, who managed to take early wickets during New Zealand's chase. However, Devon Conway's brisk 35 off 32 balls set the stage for New Zealand's win, with Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell ensuring a smooth sail to the target.
Ferguson's historic spell was the highlight of the day, marking a memorable exit for New Zealand from the tournament. His ability to trouble the batsmen consistently was evident as he joined an elite list of bowlers with his record-setting performance. The right-arm pacer's first delivery set the tone for his spell, leading to the dismissal of PNG captain Assad Vala.
The Kiwi bowling attack was relentless throughout the PNG innings, with Trent Boult and Tim Southee also making significant contributions. Boult, playing in his last T20 World Cup match, and Southee managed to keep the pressure on PNG's batting lineup from the outset.
Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi played their parts well, with Santner taking a crucial wicket and Sodhi wrapping up the PNG innings with two wickets in the final over. The collective effort from New Zealand's bowlers showcased their dominance and ensured a fitting conclusion to their World Cup journey.
Ferguson's record-breaking performance not only highlighted his prowess as a bowler but also underscored New Zealand's strength in their bowling department. As they wrapped up their World Cup campaign, this victory served as a testament to their resilience and skill, setting a high standard for future competitions.
