Female Olympians Grace Paris Runway in Celebration of Gender Parity
In Paris, often hailed as the fashion capital, the term "fashion" has been more prevalent during these Olympics than ever before. Angela Ruggiero, a four-time U.S. Olympic ice hockey medalist, chose to celebrate gender parity at these Games with a fashion show. On Sunday, around 20 former and current Olympians walked down a makeshift runway at a Paris restaurant, receiving cheers and high-fives from an enthusiastic audience.

Ruggiero, who leads a market research firm focused on sports and innovation, has observed the merging of sports and fashion for years. "And the Olympics are in Paris. I mean, what a perfect venue to celebrate a monumental achievement of gender parity on the field while nodding to opportunities off the field, including elevating these women's voices through style," she told The Associated Press.
Celebrating Gender Parity
This year, the International Olympic Committee aimed for an equal split between male and female athletes. For the first time, women have an equal share with men of an entry quota that includes 10,500 athletes across 329 events. The actual gender split will be determined by the end of the Games due to variables in team selections and country-specific rules.
Despite potential shortfalls in achieving exact parity, female athletes from various countries joined Ruggiero on the runway to celebrate this milestone. They also aimed to advocate for further advancements in sports governance. "We have to continue the momentum," said Kerri Walsh Jennings, a U.S. beach volleyball player with three gold medals and one bronze. "And we need to broaden it because it can't be once in a while. It can't be once every four years at a special event like this. We need it 365, 24-7 because women are 50% of the population."
PARITY Paris Fashion Show
The PARITY Paris runway show was hosted by the 4TheWalk clothing brand at a restaurant near Paris' Palais Garnier opera house, in collaboration with Coca-Cola. Athlete-models wore outfits from host brands and others like Sneex footwear. Many participants had never walked a runway before and felt nervous beforehand.
Among them was Sarah Walker, a New Zealand BMX racer who is six months pregnant with her second child and proudly displayed her baby bump on the catwalk. "I felt very scared – but that was kind of my indication that maybe I should do it," Walker said later. "So especially with a 2-year-old daughter and another baby girl on the way, I was like, actually this is really important to do for women in the future. Setting an example that women can do anything."
Natalie Cook, an Australian beach volleyball player who competed in five Olympics, enjoyed her first catwalk experience immensely. She made a playful supermodel hair-flicking gesture as she approached photographers. "I'm a first-timer," she said of her runway debut. "And I don't think I'll give up my athletic career."
The fashion show highlighted not only gender parity but also the intersection of sports and style in a city synonymous with fashion. This unique celebration underscored the importance of continuing efforts towards equality both on and off the field.
