Female Boxers Overcome Gender Test Hurdle for Paris Olympics Eligibility
Two female boxers disqualified at the 2023 world championships for failing gender eligibility tests have met all requirements to compete in the Paris Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Monday. Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan and Imane Khelif from Algeria are set to participate in their second Summer Games, having previously competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The IOC stated, "All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competitions eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations." Lin, aged 28, is a two-time world champion, while Khelif, aged 25, secured a silver medal at the 2022 world championships.
Boxers' Disqualification and Compliance
Both athletes were disqualified from their respective events at the world championships in New Delhi last year. These championships were organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA), which has been excluded from Olympic boxing since before the Tokyo Games. The IOC's decision to manage boxing at two consecutive Summer Games stems from ongoing disputes with the Russian-led IBA over governance issues and financial dependence on state energy firm Gazprom.
The IOC-run database, detailing around 10,700 athletes competing in Paris, highlighted both boxers' experiences at the 2023 world championships. Khelif was disqualified "just hours before her gold medal showdown" against a Chinese opponent due to elevated testosterone levels that did not meet eligibility criteria. Lin lost her bronze medal after failing to meet eligibility requirements based on biochemical test results.
Upcoming Matches and Venues
Khelif is scheduled to fight Italy's Angela Carini in the 66-kilogram category at North Paris Arena on Thursday. Lin, who received a first-round bye as the top seed in the 57-kilogram category, will have her opening bout on Friday in the round of 16. Medal bouts for boxing at Paris will be held at the Roland Garros tennis venue.
The IOC has appointed officials to oversee boxing at the Paris Olympics and acknowledged that tournament rules are "descended from" those used eight years ago at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. These officials aimed to limit changes to ensure minimal impact on athletes' preparation and maintain consistency between Olympic Games.
The differing statuses of Lin and Khelif between the Olympics and world championships are part of a broader conflict between the IOC and IBA. This dispute involves alleged governance failures and reliance on funding from Gazprom. The IOC's intervention aims to uphold integrity and fairness in Olympic boxing competitions.
Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif's participation in Paris underscores their compliance with stringent eligibility rules despite previous disqualifications. Their upcoming matches will be closely watched as they strive for Olympic success once again.
