England Nears Series Win Against Sri Lanka After Atkinson's Century
England secured a commanding position in the series against Sri Lanka, dominating the second Test at Lords. Fast bowler Gus Atkinson's unexpected century and another batting collapse by the visitors were key highlights on Friday.

After Atkinson's impressive 118 off 115 balls propelled England to 427 all out, Sri Lanka crumbled to 196 in 55.3 overs, facing a significant first-innings deficit of 231 runs. England opted not to enforce the follow-on and ended the day at 25-1, leading by 256 runs.
Atkinson's Remarkable Performance
Atkinson's performance has been a standout this summer. He took 12 wickets on debut against the West Indies and now shone with the bat, scoring his maiden Test century. His innings featured 14 fours and four sixes, including a straight drive to reach three figures.
"Incredible. Very surreal. It still hasn't sunk in," Atkinson said. "I didn't think I'd be on the Lords honours board for my batting."
Despite his batting success, Atkinson admitted that the euphoria affected his bowling. However, he remained part of a seam attack that proved too much for Sri Lanka's lineup.
England's Bowling Dominance
Atkinson, Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, and Matt Potts each took two wickets. Only Kamindu Mendis showed resistance with a score of 74, while other batsmen struggled to get past the 20s.
Sri Lanka lost Nishan Madushka and Dimuth Karunaratne early, both playing onto their stumps before lunch. Pathum Nissanka was dismissed soon after the break, flicking Stone to Potts at leg slip.
Sri Lanka's collapse continued as they fell from 83-3 to 87-6. Potts removed Angelo Mathews for 22 and captain Dhananjaya de Silva for a duck in quick succession.
Sri Lanka's Struggles
Dinesh Chandimal was dismissed for 23 after clipping Atkinson to Dan Lawrence. Milan Rathnayake edged Woakes to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith for 19, leaving Mendis as the only significant resistance.
Shoaib Bashir bowled Prabath Jayasuriya for eight, and stand-in captain Ollie Pope ran out Lahiru Kumara for a duck. Mendis was eventually out attempting to slog Atkinson.
In England's second innings, Dan Lawrence was the only wicket to fall in seven overs, nicking an inside edge onto his pads and then behind. He walked off shaking his head.
Ben Duckett remained unbeaten on 15 alongside Pope on two as England ended an excellent day overall.
Having won the first Test in Manchester last week, England is on track for a second straight series victory this summer after a 3-0 win over the West Indies last month.
The article concludes by highlighting England's strong position and Atkinson's remarkable contributions with both bat and ball at Lords.
